The Association Between Sociability and COVID-19 Pandemic Stress.Peihao Luo, Matthew L. LaPalme, Christina Cipriano & Marc A. Brackett - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
The COVID-19 pandemic threatened our physical health, alongside our mental and social wellbeing. Social distancing requirements, which are necessary to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, increased social isolation by limiting social interactions that are an essential part of human wellbeing. In this study, we examined the stress caused by COVID-19 early on in the pandemic through the lens of sociability among a large sample of preservice educators. We found that individuals who have higher sociability experienced greater COVID-19 stress. This study (...)

  9. Detecting evolving patterns of self‐organizing networks by flow hierarchy measurement.Jianxi Luo & Christopher L. Magee - 2011 - Complexity 16 (6):53-61.
Hierarchies occur widely in evolving self‐organizing ecological, biological, technological, and social networks, but detecting and comparing hierarchies is difficult. Here we present a metric and technique to quantitatively assess the extent to which self‐organizing directed networks exhibit a flow hierarchy. Flow hierarchy is a commonly observed but theoretically overlooked form of hierarchy in networks. We show that the ecological, neurobiological, economic, and information processing networks are generally more hierarchical than their comparable random networks. We further discovered that hierarchy degree has (...)

The present study investigated the lasting effects of sickness presenteeism on well-being and innovative job performance in the demanding Chinese work context compounded with the precarities of the post-pandemic business environment. Adopting the conservation of resources theory perspective, especially its proposition of compensation of resources, we incorporated social resources at work as joint moderators in the presenteeism–outcomes relationship. We employed a panel design in which all variables were measured twice with 6 months in between. Data were obtained from 323 Chinese (...)

    MS-Algebras Whose e-Ideals are Kernel Ideals.Congwen Luo & Yanlu Zheng - 2019 - Studia Logica 107 (4):659-668.
We consider, in the context of an MS-algebra L, the ideals I of L that are kernels of L. We characterize two kinds of de Morgan algebras: the class Boolean algebras and the absolutely indecomposable de Morgan algebras. We show that all the e-ideals I of L are kernel ideals of L if and only if the subalgebra \ of L can only be these two kinds of de Morgan algebras.

Flap EndoNuclease‐1 (FEN‐1) is a multifunctional and structure‐specific nuclease involved in nucleic acid processing pathways. It plays a critical role in maintaining human genome stability through RNA primer removal, long‐patch base excision repair and resolution of dinucleotide and trinucleotide repeat secondary structures. In addition to its flap endonuclease (FEN) and nick exonuclease (EXO) activities, a new gap endonuclease (GEN) activity has been characterized. This activity may be important in apoptotic DNA fragmentation and in resolving stalled DNA replication forks. The multiple (...)

A Novel Approach for Image Enhancement via Nonsubsampled Contourlet Transform.Weidong Tang, Wenlang Luo, Guangyao Li, Chao Li & Yunlan Tan - 2014 - Journal of Intelligent Systems 23 (3):345-355.
An improved image enhancement approach via nonsubsampled contourlet transform is proposed in this article. We constructed a geometric image transform by combining nonsubsampled directional filter banks and a nonlinear mapping function. Here, the NSCT of the input image is first decomposed for L-levels and its noise standard deviation is estimated. It is followed by calculating the noise variance and threshold calculation, and computing the magnitude of the corresponding coefficients in all directional subbands. Then, the nonlinear mapping function is used to (...)

The underrepresentation of females on corporate boards is an important ethical issue that raises serious concerns about gender equality in senior management teams. Relying on a large sample of public firms from the Chinese market, we examine how social trust affects female board representation. We find that female board representation has a positive and significant relation with social trust. The effect is more pronounced in regions with a higher male-to-female sex ratio at birth, lower levels of education, lower GDP per (...)

This paper compares the very different results of the use of the theories of Arthur Lewis in constructing the mixed economies of China and the Caribbean, the widely diverging paths these economies took in the era of neoliberal globalization, and how the two can cooperate now that China has entered its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) phase. We argue that in response to the great depression of the 1930s, both China and the Caribbean embarked on socialist alternatives to pure capitalism. (...)

Trust and Stock Price Synchronicity: Evidence from China.Baoyin Qiu, Junli Yu & Kuo Zhang - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 167 (1):97-109.
This paper investigates how social trust affects stock price synchronicity using a large sample of listed firms in China. We propose and provide evidence that social trust has a significantly positive impact on the amount of firm-specific information capitalized into stock prices. Further analyses indicate that firms located in regions of high social trust tend to have a smaller stock price crash risk and are less likely to engage in opportunistic behaviors than those in low-trust regions. Moreover, the positive role (...)

Reconfiguring Motherhood: The Paradox of Autonomy and the Technological-Kinship-Legal Misalignment in Transnational Gestational Surrogacy.Ruoran Murphy Qiu - forthcoming - Asian Bioethics Review:1-29.
Amid increasing transnational reproductive mobility, the lived experiences of non-genetic, non-gestational intended mothers remain critically underexplored in both law and bioethics. This study investigates the ethical and legal complexities experienced by Chinese intended mothers who pursue transnational gestational surrogacy using donor eggs, focusing on a narrative case study of a woman who, despite fulfilling all caregiving and social maternal roles, lacks genetic and gestational ties to her child. Situated between the US and Chinese legal systems, her case reveals the vulnerabilities (...)

This paper explores writings by four Chinese Marxists—Li Chunhui, Wang Chunliang, Lu Guojun, and Mao Xianglin—who engaged with Caribbean intellectuals, like Eric Williams, and used the history of the first anti-colonial revolution to rethink China’s own decolonial experiment. Examining the Effects of Interpersonal Competition on Employees’ Reporting of Unethical Behavior in Organizations.Feng Qiu, Ke Michael Mai, Aleksander P. J. Ellis, Xueqi Wen & Cheng-Huan Liu - forthcoming - Journal of Business Ethics:1-21.
Past research has tended to view employees who report unethical behavior as heroes who aim to stem the tide of unethical behavior in organizations. Our paper argues that there can be more self-serving motives underlying such behavior. Specifically, drawing on Dual-Strategies Theory, we propose that, when work is highly competitive, two distinct status striving motivations will arise in employees: dominance striving and prestige striving. We further argue that dominance striving will lead to a desire to undermine (the dominance path), and (...)

The definitions of yu 宇 and zhou 宙 in the “Gengsang Chu 庚桑楚” chapter of the Zhuangzi have been cited as the earliest definitions of space and time in the Chinese philosophical tradition. However, careful analysis of chosen modern translations reveals that the definitions entail rather obscure relationships between the Dao and space and time. I argue that the obscurity is not inherent in the text, but arises from the practice of rendering yu and zhou as the conceptual counterparts of (...)

In this study, we examine the individual social responsibility of corporate executives in the context of excessive executive pay and further explore whether executives’ individual social responsibility can translate into their firms’ corporate social responsibility (CSR). Given the morally charged discussion surrounding excessive executive pay, we analyze the research questions through the lens of social–psychological theories of morality. We find that executives’ individual social responsibility in the form of personal donations is a responsive moral cleansing action that executives take to (...)
